Gala, Conference Highlights of Big Weekend
Healthy Streets and Tasty Treats
By Rob Sadowsky
In
the past several issues, these pages have presented some exciting
discussions about the future of bicycling advocacy in the Chicago
metropolitan area. We've been talking about healthy streets --
public rights of way where people of all ages and cycling abilities
can ride
side-by-side, chatting comfortably; where
the elderly and children can walk without intimidation or uncertainty;
where
non-motorized travel is safe, fun and encouraged.
This 21st year of
bicycling advocacy in Chicagoland represents a watershed moment
for all who envision communities that routinely
accomodate the needs of bicyclists, walkers, the disabled and
transit users.
From March 31 to April 2, the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation's
Healthy
Streets Conference presents more than 20 stimulating
sessions to inform, educate and inspire bicycle advocates at
all levels.
The conference is filled with expertise and innovative ideas
to help you improve bicycling and walking conditions in your
community.
It is the premier educational and networking event for transportation
professionals, public officials and advocates.
This conference offers a rich educational experience that you
can tailor to your own interests. It provides an unparalleled opportunity
to discuss issues and share tactics with colleagues and fellow
advocates from across Chicagoland. You'll gather new knowledge,
contacts and inspiration.
In this issue, you will find articles that illustrate some of
the challenges we face in our advocacy. We have offered suggestions
of pertinent conference sessions, should you wish to explore possible
solutions.
The conference is also host to the 20th Anniversary Gala: A Tribute
to Randy Neufeld, a grand banquet that takes place at 6
p.m. April 2 on the 56th floor of the Bank One Building to celebrate
bicycling
and support the mission of the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation.
It is impossible to observe the 20th anniversary of CBF without
honoring Randy, for they are analogous. Randy has been the guiding
force of this organization from the beginning. He deserves a big
party. To learn a little more about our chief strategy officer,
check out humorist Steve Buchtel's tribute in this issue.
Chicagoland Bicycle Federation also is sponsoring the annual
Chicago Bike Show, April 1 to 3. Conference attendees will
receive free
passes to the show floor.
We hope you can join us for all or any of these events (see guide
below).
