Human Toll Compels Drive With Care Initiative Chicagoland Bicycle Federation is launching its Drive With Care
initiative at a time when motor vehicles kill nearly 200 people
each year in Northeast Illinois, while they are either riding bicycles
or walking. The media usually treat these cases as “accidents”
rather than the outcome of a systemic problem, that is, unhealthy
streets. We begin our Drive With Care issue with a partial list of the victims CBF recorded in the last two years. CBF dedicates its efforts to attain Healthy Streets in all communities to those who were killed and to their families. Robert Heinbockel, 50, killed by hit-and-run driver while biking in the 4900 block of Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, July 2003 Elena Cherry, 33, killed on the sidewalk by an out-of-control, speeding truck while walking her baby in the 1400 block of Superior Street, Chicago, July 2003 Emily Kandemir, 13, killed in a crosswalk by a truck turning right on a red light at Gilbert Avenue and 47th Street, LaGrange, July 2003 Anthony Littrice, 9, struck while playing in the 6700 block of S. Throop Street, August 2003 Melva Kingman, 85, and Merle Kingman, 86, hit in a crosswalk in the 2000 block of Central Street, Evanston, September 2003 Kevin O. Concepcion, 3, killed by a hit-and-run driver in the parking lot of his family’s apartment in 1300 block of East Indian Trail Road, Aurora, October 2003 Sebastian Karsch, 70, hit while cycling on Illinois Highway 64, November 2003 Xiuzhen Jin, 73, hit while walking her 10-year-old grandson across Sherman Avenue near Hamlin, Evanston, December 2003 Sharon Berry, 6, hit crossing the street outside of Columbus Park, Chicago, December 2003 Christopher Saathoff, 26, hit in the crosswalk at Western Avenue and Division Street, Chicago, February 2004 Kevin Aleck, 14, hit while riding his bike on Laraway Road in Frankfort, April 2004 Richard Herron, hit by a truck while riding his bicycle on Buckley Road, Libertyville, September 2004 Alicia Frantz, 32, killed in a collision with a truck while bicycling on Division Street near the Kennedy Expressway, Chicago, June 2005 Andrew Chapin, 21, killed while riding a bicycle on the shoulder of Illinois 83 near Shorewood Road, Grayslake, August 2005 Ted Bozacki, 48, hit while bicycling across Wentworth Avenue at 178th Street, Lansing, January 2006 John Grissom, 58, crossing the 5000 block of West Madison Street, Chicago, January 2006 Yvonne Dyer, 72, hit by a truck while crossing Lunt Avenue at Western Avenue, Chicago, February, 2006 Edward Meyer, 88, hit by a truck while bicycling on Isabella Street in Evanston, February 2006
