In Memoriam: Ken Licht

Ken Licht, a founding member and the first president of the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, died April 22 in La Crosse, Wis. Ken was 78 years old.

In his 1985 statement of candidacy for the board of directors of Bicycle USA, League of American Wheelmen (now League of American Bicyclists), he wrote: “I would seek to improve relationships between the cycling community and local/state decision makers ... It is my feeling that we may need to spend less time talking to each other, and more time talking to community leaders who have the power to effect change.”

CBF Chief Strategy Officer Randy Neufeld said the hallmark of Ken’s leadership was his wit. “He didn’t just have a strong vision for cycling, but he was able to communicate it in a humorous and engaging way. While Ken’s long-range goal is still yet to be fully achieved, the cycling institutions he created and nurtured have made great progress. Ken played a critical leadership role at an important time. By continuing the work he started, we honor a man whose life enriched us all.”
