Learn to Ride Safely and Confidently In Traffic

Riding in traffic takes some concentration and practice, but with a little work anyone can do it. Here are a couple of educational events that will equip anyone for using their bike for practical transportation.

League of American Bicyclists-certified instructors will teach traffic bicycling skills, including reacting to danger, plus how to carry belongings and arrive looking and smelling good. The class is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 22 at Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, 9 W. Hubbard St., Suite 402, Chicago. Bicycle and helmet required. The class also will be taught 6 to 9 p.m. July 6, 13 and 20 at the Homewood-Flossmoor Sports Complex, 18211 Aberdeen St. Tuition is $70 for either class. Register online for the class in Homewood or call (708) 957-0300. To register for the class in Chicago, contact Kate Ronan at (312) 427-3325 or school@biketraffic.org.

Learn about bicycling with small children when bicycling moms Jane Healy and Cigdem Tunar of Cycling Sisters explain everything from bike seats and trailers to logistics of commuting and living a car-light lifestyle with children, 12:15 p.m. June 7 at the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, 9 W. Hubbard St., Suite 402. No registration required. For more information, contact Jane Healy at repto@aol.com.
