Bicycles, Bakeries and Beyond

From Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood to west suburban Geneva, more than 100 businesses and organizations reward Chicagoland Bicycle Federation members with offers to enhance their bike-loving lives. Aside from the requisite bicycle shops, a plethora of businesses offer incentives to members with a current membership card.

One of the best ways to experience the region’s architecture is through the eyes of a trained docent at the Chicago Architecture Foundation. Purchase one ticket to any tour and get a free pass to any other walking/bicycle tour (some exceptions). Tours include the Kenwood-Hyde Park neighborhood, which features a remarkable collection of residences from the late 19th century.

If repertory and independent film is your thing, the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., is the place for you. This venerable movie place, operating since 1929, extends a $1 discount off admission to members.

Design your own bike-and-dine with a few friends. Start with breakfast at the bright and airy 5 Loaves Eatery, 2343 E. 71st St., located across the street from the South Shore Cultural Center. Next, head north to Chinatown’s Lao Sze Chuan, 2172 S. Archer Ave., easily the best spot around for fiery Szechuan. If it’s the first Friday of the month, take a detour to The Bleeding Heart Bakery, 2018 W. Chicago Ave., and choose from sustainable, organic and vegan

baked goods and savories. Farther north is Rique's Regional Mexican Food, 5004 N. Sheridan Rd., offering indigenous cuisine from various regions of Mexico. End your tour with a visit to Mysore Woodlands, 2548 W. Devon Ave., which serves an all-vegetarian menu, with foods from South India.

For an historic “main street” experience, visit one of the increasing number of suburban towns getting behind bicycling. One is west suburban Geneva, located along the Fox River Trail, where city officials recently approved a citywide bicycle plan. Spend the afternoon in the downtown shopping district – just three blocks west of the trail – and get a free bottle of water at Just In Time Sandwiches, 227 S. Third St., and next-door neighbor Nuts About Nuts. Fulfill your nutty cravings and receive an extra 10 percent off your purchase at Nuts About Nuts.

This is just a start. Save a few bucks and support the ones who support you. For a complete list of member discount partners, visit www.biketraffic.org.
