Memorial to Fund Teen Job Training

One year ago, Dick Herron was hit and killed by a truck while riding his bicycle on Buckley Road, near Libertyville.

On Sept. 25, five days following the first anniversary of Herron’s death, friends and family of Dick and his wife, Jane, will meet on bikes in Chicago’s DePaul neighborhood to ride some of Dick’s favorite routes and celebrate cycling, while helping create positive educational and social change.

Richard Herron, pictured at left with his wife, Jane, was killed last year while riding in Libertyville.

The Dick Herron Memorial Ride was organized by Jane Herron — with help from the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation — after she called CBF looking for ideas to memorialize her husband and to honor his passion for bicycling.
Participants in the ride will donate funds to CBF’s Build & Ride program (featured in Bike Traffic, June 2005), a bike-building and job-readiness afterschool program that invests in Chicago’s youth as agents of social change.

“Build & Ride marries the passions Dick and I share for cycling and education,” Jane Herron wrote in the invitation to the Memorial Ride.
Build & Ride aims to build healthier communities by helping teens build life skills around mobility, recreation, exercise and employment. The ultimate goals of this initiative are for at-risk youth to be more physically active, less obese and skilled in workplace protocol and responsibility.

Anyone can contribute to the fund. Send checks payable to the “Dick Herron Memorial Fund” to Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, 650 S. Clark St., Room 300, Chicago, IL 60605; or contact Arline Welty at (312) 427-3325, ext. 237.
