Racing Action and Family Fun on the South Side

The 16th Ward plans a day of U.S. Cycling Association-sanctioned races, plus family fun, Sept. 3 at the South Side’s legendary Sherman Park bike racing course.

In addition to top-notch racing action with categories from beginner through professional, the Crit includes free children’s races and free bike repairs. The event is sponsored by Ald. Shirley Coleman and the XXX-Racing Athletico Team.

Also planned is the Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Series races. Races start at 8 a.m. and conclude at 5:45 p.m. Children’s races start at 2:15 p.m. There is no charge for spectators.

Located on Garfield Boulevard, between Loomis and Racine avenues, Sherman Park hosted bicycle races as far back as the 1930s.

The tree lined .9-mile loop around the park is the perfect place to host criterium-style racing. Criteriums involve bicyclists covering multiple laps over a given period of time. The shortest event will be 30 minutes for those newest to bike racing, and will range with skill level to the longest event, 75 minutes for the professional and highest level amateur racers.
