Movement Gets Children Moving
Remember walking and bicycling to school? In 1969, more than half
of American children got to school that way. Today, fewer than 15
percent walk or bike to school. Walking and bicycling for transportation
form the basis of an active
lifestyle, helping prevent childhood obesity and later problems
such as diabetes and heart disease. Chicagoland Bicycle Federation’s
Safe Routes to School program is part of a national movement to
get children to and from school in the safest and healthiest ways
possible. This month, learn how CBF helps local communities maximize
the $23 million Illinois will spend on Safe Routes to School in
the next four years.
Seed Money for a Movement
In the 2006 federal transportation bill, Congress for the first
time allocated money specifically for Safe Routes to School programs
in the states. For Illinois, it means $23 million to be spent over
four years; and though that’s a relatively small sum, Chicagoland
Bicycle Federation will leverage it to galvanize youth walking and
bicycling. >> More
