Illinois senators Barack Obama and Dick Durbin recently introduced bills that promote active lifestyles and health.

The Healthy Places Act, sponsored by Obama, addresses the built environment’s health effects on children, such as diabetes, obesity and asthma. The legislation is supported by 81 organizations, including the League of American Bicyclists.

“Improvements to the built environment can have significant health benefits, as measured by greater physical activity, healthier diets, fewer injuries, a reduction in toxic emissions, and improved air, water and soil quality,” Obama said.

Durbin’s Bicycle Commuters Benefit Act provides employees the same benefit for commuting by bicycle that other employees get for taking mass transit.

Chicagoland Bicycle Federation is seeking candidates to fill two full-time positions: an events production manager and a volunteer coordinator. For complete job description and to submit a resume, visit www.biketraffic.org/jobs.php.
