London, U.K.
Welcome to our new feature, in which we focus on one of our
peer organizations worldwide. This issue, we look at the capital
of the British Empire: London, England, where Tom Bogdanowicz, manager
of campaigns and development for the London Cycling Campaign, took
some time to answer our questions.
Organization: London Cycling Campaign
Number of members: 9,500
Year established: 1978
Web site: www.lcc.org.uk
What area/jurisdiction does your organization represent:
Greater London.
Mission: To make London a worldclass cycling city.
Describe your two greatest successes in the last 12 months:
1.) Helping the thousands of Londoners who’ve taken up cycling
and contributing to the sharp increase in cycle use over the past
four year (approximately 40 percent). 2.) Heading off legislation
that could have given local authorities wider powers to remove cycles
parked at railings without notifying the owners.
What are the two of the most significant issues facing
cyclists in your area: 1.) Lack of facilities such as secure
cycling parking in workplaces and on housing estates. 2.) Complex
‘gyratory’ road systems (or roundabouts that have acquired
multiple lane markings and complex, multiphase traffic lights, causing
the simple roundabout priority rules to break down) in densely populated
urban areas, many of which were designed in the 60s and 70s.
What are two of your top goals for the coming 12 months:
Sustain recent increases in cycling and turn new converts into members.
What advice do you have for bicycling advocates? Show
people the benefits of choosing sustainable transport without being
judgmental.
