It’s a Sign of the Times
You might have noticed that some helpful signs appeared recently
on Chicago’s streets. In August,
the Chicago bike lane network was outfitted with new route signage.

you can’t help but notice these spiffy new signs unless,
of course, you ride very fast. (CDOT photo) |
Chicagoland Bicycle Federation consulted on the project, which
marks another step by the city of Chicago to promote and improve
bicycling.
“With these signs, the best streets for bicycling in Chicago
are now identified,” said Mayor
Richard M. Daley.
The new bike route signage provides information on major destinations
along the street and the distance to those destinations.
For example, distances to the Loop
or Lakefront
are provided.
The system Chicago developed is expected to be adopted as the national
route signage standard by 2008.
Chicago
Department of Transportation acting Commissioner Cheri Heramb
said, “Chicago’s bikeway network is now one of the longest
and best-designed in the United States.” There is a total
of 125 miles of on-street and off-street bike routes citywide.
This milestone is the latest in a continuing program of bicycling-related
improvements throughout the city. Last fall, Chicago installed its
100th bike lane and 10,000th bike rack. Also last summer, Mayor
Daley opened the Millennium
Park Bicycle Station.
