'Viral' Campaign Aims to Get People Talking
Focusing attention on bad driving
by Randy Neufeld
Some are offended, others laugh out loud. The dark humor of Bob
Fuller’s Roadside Memorials always gets a response.
That is by design. Derek Sherman and Jimmy Olson of the advertising
firm Energy
BBDO volunteered to create a marketing campaign that got a message
to drivers about slowing down and paying attention. The challenge
they faced was that reckless and inattentive drivers are the last
ones who want to hear a safe driving message. Bob Fuller was the
solution.
Blow their minds with an outrageous service for unsafe drivers
and the safety message hits them in a surprising way.
The true test of Bob Fuller’s merit will be buzz.
Can our little viral
campaign crack the saturated Chicago market and get people talking
about traffic danger?
We want to do something about the 80,000 traffic deaths and injuries
that happen every year in Chicago and the suburbs. Can we get anyone
to notice?
Can we get anyone to care?
Bob Fuller is our first barrage. We want the public and their leaders
to want to do something about traffic danger.

| A Web banner ad for
Bob Fuller's Roadside Memorials |
It takes resources to do the things that work. Traffic-calming
street design, speed enforcement and marketing better driver behavior
won’t happen without appropriate public outrage.
Bob Fuller is hiring. Will you be on his sales force? The pay is
terrible but the benefits are saving the lives of people you love.
Here’s what you can do:
- Pass out business cards.
Put them on cars in parking lots. Call us to work with a team or
order cards on Bob’s website.
- Find events for Bob to speak
- Get banner ads placed on websites where you
have connections. Your webmaster can download a web ad on Bob’s
website.
- Email people about Bob. Share the link to Bob’s
TV spot (see sidebar).
- Street installations with sample memorials are powerful.
