Store owner gets employees to bike

David Eenigenburg knows biking is good for business. Since opening his Trek Bicycle Store in Schererville, Indiana, he’s been on a mission to get more employees to bike to work.

“The coffee pot goes unplugged for weeks. Biking to work is better than a cup of coffee – people walk in refreshed, productivity’s up, it’s a friendly atmosphere,” David said.
Here are five of David’s strategies for encouraging bicycle commuting that any business can try:

#1. Offer incentives. David gives his employees $5 every day they bike. By peak season, 60 percent of his employees were biking.

#2. David sets an example. He bicycle commutes six miles each way every day. Now his general manager and service manager also bike.

#3. Bicycle-friendly facilities take money, but David says it’s worth it. “Employees like that a business cares enough to put showers in.” His store has ample bike parking, showers and a locker room.

#4. David is a strong believer in bicycle commuter education. He posts information on the website and around the store and talks about bicycle commuting in staff meetings.

#5. Encourage employees. David’s service manager, Bill Zellers, commutes eight miles to work by bike every day since October. Now he says it’s a habit. What got him hooked? “Just encouragement,” Zellers said.
