Pedestrian safety for seniors is a goal Metro Seniors in Action is working toward with the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation’s assistance. CBF is providing strategic planning and technical assistance to bolster safety at four intersections – Sheridan Road and Foster Avenue, Lake Park Avenue and 47th Street, Stony Island Avenue and 79th and 87th streets – that have among the highest concentrations of senior residents in the city of Chicago. Strategies include fixing basic maintenance problems – like walk signals that are too dim to read – to increasing the amount of time allotted for each walk signal.

CBF is actively working with the village of Northbrook to implement a bicycle plan. In addition to technical assistance to remove a travel lane and add bike lanes on Techny Road, CBF also testified before the Northbrook Safety Commission in favor of the village adopting shared-lane markings on its streets.

With one of the highest pedestrian rates in the region, Cicero is ready to make the village a safer place to walk. CBF recently partnered with the village to help prepare a Transportation Enhancement's grant application for pedestrian safety improvements, including creating a map of pedestrian crashes in the village. Mapping the location of pedestrian injuries is critical to understanding where improvements need to be made. Surprisingly, mapping the data in Cicero revealed many of the pedestrian crashes are concentrated on the streets with high volumes of vehicle traffic, such as Roosevelt and Cermak Roads.
