Want to Commute By Bike? – Let’s Do Lunch

By David Callahan

Probably, it’s the soaring gas prices. Maybe it’s also the example set by so many members of the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation. Whatever the reason, it seems more people want to commute by bicycle in Chicagoland.

The public is invited Dec. 9 to enjoy lunch while chatting about bike commuting, as this crowd did in October at CBF offices.

So CBF recently began marketing informal lunchtime roundtable discussions on bike commuting for workers in Chicago’s Loop. The first, hosted in CBF’s new offices at 9 W. Hubbard St., drew nearly a dozen people from the neighborhood.

Participants brought their own lunches, and conversed freely about their concerns, including dealing with aggressive drivers, wearing the right clothes, freshening up after the ride and maintaining one’s bike. It was decided that CBF would expand this initiative to match the demand.

Team Bank of America's Environmental Network hosts the second roundtable: noon to 1 p.m. Dec. 9, in the 13N conference room, 231 S. LaSalle St.

"Bicycles are back mainly because the increase in gas prices has made them a better way to get around," said Randy Warren, program director at the CBF. "We want to help people make informed decisions about commuting.”

Seasoned bicycle commuters share commuting tips and tricks at this informal discussion on topics such as route selection, clothing choices, riding in the fall and winter months, how to carry things to and from work by bike and looking good upon arriving at work.

For more information about the Dec. 9 roundtable and future dates, contact Randy Warren at (312) 427-3325, ext. 221, or visit www.biketraffic.org.
