Chicagoland Host to Countless Bikeable Destinations


Summers in Chicago offer many celebrations of cultural diversity.

Here are some bike-accessible places where you can delve deeper into Chicago’s rich ethnic heritage, along with some recommended routes. We suggest you reference the Chicagoland Bicycle Map to customize your route.

Irish American Heritage Festival — Check out the 22nd annual event July 13 to 15. Experience the finest in local and international Irish music, dance and family activities. For tickets call (773) 282-7035, ext. 10. 4626 N. Knox Ave., Chicago.
Directions: Montrose stop on the Blue Line. Or bike up Milwaukee or Elston to Lawrence. From the east, take Lawrence all the way. From the south, Kostner is recommended. The North Shore Channel Trail and the North Branch Trail from the north both meet up with Milwaukee.

Mexican Fine Arts Center – Women Artists of Modern Mexico: Frida's Contemporaries. The exhibit highlights paintings, photography, sculpture, dance and literature by 26 artists who exemplify Mexican social consciousness from the beginning of the 20th Century. June 22 to Sept. 2. 1852 West 19th St., Chicago. (312) 738-1501.
Directions: Halsted is a great route from either north or south and meets up with 21st Street. From the east, Roosevelt is recommended and it intersects with Blue Island Avenue to get you there.

Chinatown Summer Fair — July 15, 2007 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wentworth Avenue from Cermak Road to 24th Place. Lion dance procession and Asian cultural entertainment including local restaurants and gift shops.
Directions: From the Lakefront Trail, take 18th Street west, to Clark Street south, to Archer Avenue west, to Wentworth. Or take Wabash south to Archer. If you come from the west, take 18th Street east, to Canal Street south, to Cermak.

Oktoberfest — 3000 N. Lincoln to Southport September 28-30. The sixth annual St. Alphonsus Oktoberfest was founded by German immigrants in 1882 and celebrates its German roots every September. The fest will be complete with “oom-pah” bands, beers and bratwurst.
Directions: Lincoln Avenue is the best route to Oktoberfest. Diversey, Fullerton, Southport, Halsted and Wilson all intersect with it.
