Advocacy welcomes new faces to bicycling efforts

The Chicagoland Bicycle Federation has welcomed some new staff in the last several months.

Chris Ege joined the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation staff in March 2007 as Technology Manager. Chris develops and maintains the various websites, including www.biketraffic.org and www.healthystreets.org.

He also keeps office technology, servers and computers working and updated, calming staff anxiety and fear of them. Chris has five years of

experience in database and website management for a marketing/promotions firm. He also worked for a prominent Internet news website.

Originally from the Twin Cities, Chris graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999 with a degree in graphic design. He moved to Chicago in 2001 and lives in the Logan Square neighborhood.

Chris, an amateur bike mechanic, is an avid bicyclist and races at the Northbrook Velodrome for Team Pegasus.

Liz Farina Markel describes herself as a late bicycle bloomer. Severe klutziness, coupled with a nasty spill on gravel and a collision with a car sans helmet early in life kept her away from biking for many years.

As a more coordinated and properly helmeted adult, she rediscovered the empowering abilities of bicycling when she took up triathlons.

The purchase of a light, sleek Trek 1000, the plethora of local bike lanes and bike trails, and the ability to commute by bike sealed the deal on her newfound love.

As membership manager, Liz works to maintain current members and collaborates with the events, communications and marketing teams and community liaisons to welcome new members.

Liz Farina Markel is heading up research to help the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation establish its presence in communities previously underserved by bicycling advocacy.

Outside of work, Liz is a proud College of Wooster and Michigan State graduate.

She voraciously fills every moment of non-work time with triathlon or half-marathon training, photography, cooking, or — on a slow day — a good book.
