Member lends expertise for annual bicycling bash

Bike Traffic: What kind of work did you perform?

Jennifer Norris: The responsibilities (for Bike Town Bash) included event production; matching committee member strengths to key committee responsibilities and projects; marketing; media outreach and sponsorship; and seeking sponsors and developing the silent auction component for the event.

BT: Was serving on this committee fun?

JN: Serving on this committee was definitely fun. It also was a lot of work, and challenged me to think about myself and my leadership skills in new ways. Thankfully those "blankout leadership" moments were few and far between. From a leadership and development perspective, I wasn't expecting so much reflective learning! Serving on this committee also made me think about ways I could become a better steward of cycling beyond my Chicagoland Bicycle Federation ties. I ended up launching a bicycle commuter workshop at my workplace (of course tapping into the mondo cycling guru Randy Warren), and our facilities manager indicated he'd like to launch it at our three other campuses!

BT: What would you say to someone who’s interested in volunteering?

JN: Know your strengths and passions, and think of ways you want to grow. The organization can help you stretch, practice and grow yourself, as well as positively contribute to our community. Reach out and volunteer with the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, or even take your bicycling passion and spread it outside of the organization’s realm, too. Think of me and initiating a commuter workshop. Plant the seed. And go for it!
