Honor fallen bicyclists and pedestrians.

Meet at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 19 in Lincoln Park at the North Avenue pedestrian bridge as we remember bicyclists and pedestrians killed in traffic.

The family-themed, donation-based event raises money for the unique, educational after-school Build and Ride bike program for at-risk Chicago Public Schools students. Donations can also be directed toward Northwest Chicago Drive with Care, a campaign to stigmatize and stop reckless driving.

Nearly 200 bicyclists and pedestrians are needlessly killed each year in Chicago, and the Dick Herron Memorial Bike and Walk is a time to come together and celebrate these lives.

For the past three years, the Dick Herron Memorial Bike and Walk has brought together bicyclists and pedestrians to raise public awareness of the tragedy of pedestrian and bicycling deaths and to transform that tragedy into an effort that helps build our community and transform grief.

Celebrate the victims’ lives and transform our future into a brighter one. Donations can be made to the Dick Herron Memorial Fund by calling or e-mailing Arline Welty, director of development, at (312) 427-3325, ext. 237.
