FOR PARENTS, TEACHERS AND CHILDREN

We have two programs, the Bicycling Ambassadors and Safe Routes to School, which specialize in teaching bicycling skills and safety to children.

During the summer months, Mayor Daley's Bicycling Ambassadors promote bicycling safety throughout the city of Chicago. Working face-to-face with kids and teens, the Bicycling Ambassadors provide the following services:
  • Helmet fittings
  • Bicycle safety checks
  • Presentations on how to avoid car-bike crashes
  • Demonstrations of CTA bus bike-carrying racks
  • Distribution of safety materials and bike maps
  • Helping nonbikers or novice bikers to bicycle more
  • Teaching Chicagoans how to bike to work or school
  • Instruction to motorists and bike riders on the use of bike lanes
  • Presentation at schools, summer camps and CAPS meetings
The Safe Routes to School program works with parents, school staff, community leaders and government agencies to identify barriers to walking and bicycling, and remove those barriers with innovative solutions. We will work with your community to:
  • Assess the need for drop-off restrictions around the school
  • Identify routes currently safe and those that may need improvements
  • Install bicycling facilities
  • Encourage parents to sign the "Pace Car Pledge" and help calm traffic by driving the speed limit
  • Train teachers and parents how to teach traffic safety
  • Organize neighbors to bike and walk together in riding and walking "school buses"
